I Love Desk

It's been about three months since I moved to Austin and started working from home. In the move, I gave up my office desk, obviously, and all of the furniture in my apartment, which wasn't worth shipping cross-country. I also decided I didn't really have room for a desk in my new house either. It's not that I didn't want a desk. My new place has very little storage space, so I had to opt for some drawers and shelves and felt there wasn't enough room for a desk.

Then I realized: I need a desk. As much as I love to write, I can't go without one. There's something about dedicating a clear space to my laptop (or paper), coffee, glasses, pens, candle, tchotchkes, scraps of inspiration; it creates a little temple, a spiritual center of sorts. I know it's just a desk. But it's important to me.

So I set out last weekend to build the smallest and cheapest office possible, and here it is!

My tiny desk

I bought the desk for $25 at Ikea and the chair was $15. I opted for Christmas lights to give a nice glow and because a lamp would take up too much space. I put up four squares of corkboard and loaded them with items from my old desks. I have just enough room for my beverages, notebooks, pens, glasses and breakfast, lunch or dinner.

I am so much happier now. Desk, I love you.

The End of an Era

In case you missed it, I wrote my farewell to SFist a few weeks ago, in which I retired my "When The Lights Go Down In The City" music column I've been writing for the past three years.

It was SFist's first editor Jackson West who asked me to write a music column back in '04 and he also came up with the name of it. I thought, it's SF-related and a quote from a Journey song - perfect! For the past three years my aim has been to tell you about the music in San Francisco that I like and hopefully expose you to stuff you've never heard. And so you could actually hear and enjoy the music instead of just reading about it, I tried to give away a CD or tickets each week. You've noticed by now that I've broken out using the royal "we". I figured I could break the rules since this is the last post I'll write for SFist. I'm moving away from San Francisco, back home to Austin, Texas, which is probably the only reason I'd stop writing for this incredible site.

The Swell Season) strolling smilingly toward 24th Street, not a care in the world. They didn't look like two musicians preparing for a concert and they certainly didn't give off ...

I also wrote a review of The Swell Season's show at Noe Valley Ministry. The show was incredible, so if you've seen the film Once (or want to see it), you might find the review interesting!

Steve just stood over my shoulder and watched as I read his post about using the upcoming Vox This feature.

His post passed the test (or maybe I passed the test) when I was able to use it succesfully - hooray!

I have no design skills

I wrote three posts today that will, in total, eventually be read by thousands of people (and in LJ's case, commented upon by hundreds already). Actually I just posted them all today, I've been writing them over the past few days.

Writing to large audiences is a huge challenge which brings me great anxiety, but also a sense of accomplishment. Sometimes when I'm done my brain feels like oatmeal.

And now I'm going to see Birds & Batteries at Hotel Utah, and take a break from the internet for at least twelve whole hours. Good night.
