Between working alone from home and my roommate being out of town, I was in need of some socializing this weekend.
On Thursday night, my friend Kris and I went to Polvo's for some Tex Mex and then to South Congress Avenue in pursuit of the cupcake-mobile. Seeing how crowded South Congress was made us realize it was First Thursday, where all the businesses stay open late and people walk around to eat, drink and shop. After downing a red velvet cupcake, I was delighted to stumble across a free outdoor performance by Ruben Ramos, the perfectly-coiffed, impeccably-dressed silver fox whose Grammy-winning work with Los Super Seven represents just a small portion of a 35 year career as a Tejano singer. He makes me swoon a little. To satisfy an audience member's request, he launched into the country classic "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" and I shocked myself by knowing nearly all the lyrics, learned via osmosis growing up in Texas.
On Friday night my roommate came home! I was so happy. He's been on tour with Stars of Track and Field and Eskimo Joe so we ended up hanging out with those guys most of the weekend. Eskimo Joe are multi-platinum superstars in their home country of Australia but are still building a fanbase here. Despite being accustomed to playing to thousands in stadiums and generally being adored, they were really down to earth and put on a stadium-sized performance on Emo's tiny, grimy stage.
Everyone left on Saturday night after the show, and I was sad to see them go. Today is my roommate Jeff's birthday! HAPPY BIRFDAY JEFF! Hopefully he's celebrating at his show in Tempe, AZ, tonight.
The Jeff Klein / Eskimo Joe / Stars of Track and Field tour stops in San Francisco at Bottom of the Hill on Wednesday night, November 7th.
