Does Sasha Frere-Jones' latest New Yorker article have you up in arms like it does some other people? Did you have to look up the meaning of the word miscegenation like I did?
Tell us about a lesson you had to learn the hard way.
The people you trust can change their minds.
How did you meet your best friend(s)?
I met two of my best friends, Nyla and Laurie, through a posting on JeffBuckley.com in 1998 (or 99?) that asked people to write in if Jeff had inspired them to create something. I wrote in about a tribute I held for Jeff in Austin, TX, in September 1997, and the people who had written the post (two filmmakers working on a documentary) said they wanted to meet me.
I went to NYC and met these mysterious filmmakers at a diner on Van Dam street. They were Nyla and Laurie, two women about my age and we instantly sparked. Eight years later (including cross country travels and moves, match-making, endless hours of talking, one marriage, one award-winning documentary, and lots more stuff), they are two of the closest friends I've ever had.
I'm sure glad I sent that email!
What's your motto?
I even have a shirt that says it, courtesy of Jackpine Social Club.
What albums are in heavy rotation for you right now?
These questions always stump me; as soon as someone asks me this all the music knowledge just drains out of my head. I'm going to think of 2 or 3 other albums this week that I should have included...
Here are three I can think of now:
I feel a bit self-conscious that this is all new music, but I guess that's what I've been in the mood for lately. When I was in LA, Jason was playing the latest Fair to Midland album, inter.funda.stifle, in his dressing room. He described it as The Mars Volta (FTM's from Denton, TMV's from El Paso) but with stronger songwriting. I loved what I heard: it was lush, bombastic, dynamic (Laurie, they're opening for System of a Down) and all over the place in a way that made total sense, if you were willing to go with it. (I tried to upload their album into my audio stream but Amazon doesn't have the album cover on file. So I had to add it the old school way.)
What magazines do you subscribe to, and why?
Lucky, because it's like an hour of window shopping. I love tagging pages with those stupid "Yes" and "Maybe" stickers, even though I rarely go back and look at them.
