The Secret Life of Bees is sweet, a bit on the sad side and very well written. I liked it a lot, but you should read it when you are in the mood for something melancholy.
I loved the Secret Life of Bees! I hated Running with Scissors. I admit
I did not finish reading it and threw it in the trash because it
actually made me sick to my stomach. Too dark for my tastes. Perhaps if
I had thought of it as fiction I would have enjoyed it more, but it's a
bit horrifying as a supposedly true story.
i suggest starting with Augusten Burroughs' "Magical Thinking" before "Running With Scissors". Both are awesome, but just a better introduction in that order. he's basically a david sedaris knockoff with a more sordid past, but there's still room for more of that, imo. there's a very brief "where are they now" page at the end of running which scissors which restores hope by way of one of the familymembers you might not expect (besides Augusten, and mini-spoiler: it's not "Hope").
secret life of bees is loved by many of my friends. it is sweet and a good read but yes, you have to be in the right mood. freakonomics i hear is very interesting. it's on my list. tell me how it is!
Running with Scissors is good, I'm reading it right now. I read Secret Life a while ago so I don't remember much past how good I thought it was. I wanted to get Freakonomics a while ago but didn't have enough money on me or something, and the rest I haven't read.
Freakonomics is a great read. Highly recommended. When you wrap that one up, move on to the Tipping Point, Blink and then "The World is Flat"... Good meaty stuff.
